All You Need to Know About Tallow

(Frequently Asked Questions)

What does tallow do for your skin?

Beef tallow is a deeply nourishing moisturiser that helps support healthy, hydrated skin. Its unique composition closely resembles the natural oils (sebum) produced by our skin, allowing it to absorb easily and work in harmony with the skin's protective barrier.

Tallow is naturally rich in:

  • Essential fatty acids & lipids, which help soften the skin and reduce moisture loss.
  • Vitamin A: Is widely recognised as one of the skin's most important nutrients. It helps to:
    • Support normal skin cell renewal.
    • Promote smoother, healthier-looking skin.
    • Improve the appearance of dry, rough skin.
    • Support the skin's natural barrier function.
    • Contribute to a brighter, more even-looking complexion.
  • Vitamin D: plays an important role in maintaining healthy skin by helping to:
    • Support the skin's natural protective barrier.
    • Promote balanced skin function.
    • Help maintain skin hydration.
    • Support the skin's natural renewal processes.
  • Vitamin E: is one of nature's best-known antioxidants. It helps to:
    • Protect the skin from environmental stressors caused by free radicals.
    • Support the skin's moisture barrier.
    • Improve skin softness and suppleness.
    • Help reduce moisture loss, leaving skin feeling hydrated.
    • Work alongside other antioxidants to maintain healthy-looking skin.
  • Vitamin K: is a lesser-known but valuable nutrient in skincare. It helps to:
    • Support healthy-looking skin.
    • Contribute to maintaining the skin's natural appearance.
    • Work alongside vitamins A, D and E to nourish and protect the skin

When applied to the skin, tallow helps to:

  • Deeply moisturise dry skin.
  • Support the skin's natural protective barrier.
  • Lock in hydration and reduce water loss.
  • Leave the skin feeling soft, smooth and supple.
  • Protect the skin from everyday environmental stressors.

Unlike many conventional moisturisers that rely heavily on water and synthetic ingredients, tallow provides concentrated nourishment using naturally occurring fats that are highly compatible with human skin.

At Tallowmara, our grass-fed tallow is carefully handcrafted in small batches and blended with premium botanical oils to create skincare that is simple, effective and inspired by nature.

Because healthy skin doesn't always need more ingredients—it often just needs the right ones.

Why We Use German Chamomile & Calendula

At Tallowmara, every botanical is chosen with purpose. We pair our nutrient-rich, grass-fed tallow with German chamomile and calendula because they complement tallow's moisturising properties and help create skincare that helps sooth and deeply nourish your skin.

German Chamomile

German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) has been treasured for centuries for its naturally soothing properties. Its deep blue essential oil contains compounds such as chamazulene and bisabolol, which are widely valued in skincare.

German chamomile is known for helping to:

  • Comfort dry, delicate and easily irritated skin.
  • Leave the skin feeling calm and balanced.
  • Support the skin's natural moisture barrier.
  • Provide antioxidant compounds that help protect the skin from environmental stressors.
  • Leave skin feeling soft and cared for after exposure to wind, sun and harsh weather.

Its gentle nature makes it a popular botanical in products designed for everyday skincare, including formulations for delicate skin.

Calendula

Calendula (Calendula officinalis), often called marigold, has long been used in traditional herbal skincare. Rich in naturally occurring flavonoids and carotenoids, calendula is valued for its ability to comfort and nourish the skin.

Calendula is known for helping to:

  • Moisturise and soften dry skin.
  • Support the skin's natural renewal process.
  • Comfort skin that feels dry, rough or tight.
  • Promote a healthy-looking complexion.
  • Provide antioxidant compounds that help defend against everyday environmental stress.

Its gentle, nourishing nature makes calendula a favourite ingredient for skincare suitable for the whole family.

Why They're Better Together

Our grass-fed tallow provides the skin with deeply nourishing fatty acids and naturally occurring vitamins, while German chamomile and calendula complement those benefits with their calming and conditioning properties.

Together they help to:

  • Nourish and deeply moisturise the skin.
  • Support a healthy skin barrier.
  • Leave skin feeling calm, soft and comfortable.
  • Help protect against moisture loss.
  • Promote smooth, healthy-looking skin.

It's a simple combination inspired by nature!

Why does Tallowmara use grass-fed tallow?

As the sister brand to Hunter Valley Premium Meats, we control every step of the journey. We grow the crops, raise the cattle and carefully prepare the premium grass-fed tallow used in every batch. This gives us confidence in the quality, consistency and traceability of every product we make

Can I use tallow on my face?

Yes. Many people use tallow as part of their daily facial skincare routine because it is rich, nourishing and absorbs well into the skin. Tallow has been used traditionally as a gentle moisturiser for generations. Our Tallowtots range is thoughtfully formulated with gentle botanicals for delicate skin. As with any skincare product, we recommend patch testing before first use and seeking advice from your healthcare professional if you have concerns about your baby's skin.

What makes Tallowmara different?

Tallowmara isn't just a skincare brand—we're farmers first. As the sister brand to Hunter Valley Premium Meats, we oversee the entire journey ourselves. We grow the feed, raise the cattle, produce the tallow and handcraft every batch in small quantities on our farm. It's skincare with complete traceability, crafted with integrity and inspired by nature!

Why is Tallowmara's tallow yellow instead of white?

The natural colour of grass-fed beef tallow can range from creamy white to rich golden yellow, depending on the animal's diet and the season.

At Tallowmara, our cattle graze on nutrient-rich pastures and are fed crops grown on our family farm. This natural diet contains plant pigments called carotenoids (including beta-carotene), which are stored in the fat and give our tallow its beautiful golden hue.

Rather than bleaching or heavily refining our tallow to make it bright white, we choose to preserve its natural character. The colour may vary slightly from batch to batch because that's exactly what happens when you work with real, natural ingredients.

To us, those subtle variations are a sign of authenticity—not imperfection. They reflect the seasons, the pasture and the journey from our paddocks to your skin.
